When you spawn into a new world in Terraria, the clock is already ticking. After about 15 minutes of daylight, night falls — and with it comes a horde of hostile creatures ready to turn your adventure into a nightmare. Here’s how to survive your first night and set yourself up for success.

1. Gather Wood Immediately
Your starting tool is a copper axe — use it to chop down nearby trees. Wood is your most important resource early on. Aim to gather at least 100–150 pieces. You’ll use it to build shelter, make basic tools, and craft a workbench.
2. Build a Simple Shelter
Before night arrives, build a small enclosed house. Use wooden blocks or walls to create a box-shaped structure. Add a door, a wooden platform for a roof, and don’t forget a background wall — monsters will spawn inside if you leave it out. Place a torch inside to keep it lit.
3. Craft a Workbench and Basic Tools
Place a workbench inside your shelter to unlock crafting options. Make a wooden sword (a "broad sword" type is best for swinging attacks), a few torches, and a wooden bow if you’ve collected gel from slimes to craft arrows.
4. Stay Indoors at Night
Once the sun sets, stay inside. Zombies and Demon Eyes roam the surface and can easily overwhelm an unarmored player. If you have time, dig downward with your pickaxe to start a basic mine or explore underground. Just make sure you seal the entrance.
5. Use the Time Wisely
Craft, organize, and start mining beneath your base. Nighttime is perfect for planning your next moves without taking risks. If you found ores or stone, consider crafting a furnace and start upgrading your gear early.
Bonus Tip: Your starting NPC, the Guide, can help with crafting recipes. If you keep him alive in your shelter, he’ll be a useful resource as you learn the game.
With a secure base and a few tools in hand, surviving the first night in Terraria becomes more about preparation than panic. Once the sun rises, the real adventure begins — dungeons, bosses, treasure, and the ever-expanding world await.
