Sephiroth begins as a war hero in the world of Final Fantasy VII, the pride of the Shinra Electric Power Company’s elite military unit known as SOLDIER. Unbeknownst to him, Sephiroth was the result of the “Jenova Project,” a Shinra experiment that involved injecting a human fetus with cells from Jenova — an alien lifeform mistaken for an Ancient (Cetra), the planet's original guardians. These alien cells gave Sephiroth extraordinary powers but also planted the seeds of madness.
Upon learning of the Jenova Project during a mission in Nibelheim, Sephiroth descended into a psychological spiral. He believed himself to be the rightful heir to the planet, destined to rule over humanity, whom he saw as traitors to the Cetra legacy. This led to the burning of Nibelheim and the beginning of his transformation into a vengeful god-like being.
Sephiroth’s ultimate plan, known as the “Reunion,” involved summoning a meteor to wound the planet, then absorbing the resulting surge of spiritual energy (Lifestream) to become a god. His twisted ideology and haunting presence become central to the game’s plot, as the protagonist Cloud and his allies fight to stop him.
